reloading data question by gonefornow: Wildcat cartridge reloading data?
Hello all,
We are resubmitting this question in an effort to gain some hope due to a potential down side from a very bad accident. My goal is to continue shooting. For those who feel they answered the question before, please read the entire question. I have been a lifelong shooter and reloader for over 35 years. I know how to reload and I am a Master Class competitive rifleman. You don’t get there using a Walmart special.
Because of my accident I am facing the possibility of hanging up my traditional target rifles [I am not looking to sell nor looking for buyers]. I am looking at the possibility of either limited use of my left arm (best case scenario) or losing complete use of my left arm (worst case scenario). I want to continue formal target shooting and am looking at building a 1000 yard gun firing a lighter recoiling (?) wildcat cartridge in order to be able to continue competition. I need answers to some questions.
cont’d.
1. Where can I find reliable published data for wildcat cartridges?
2. I think I have selected the .22-6mm Ackley Improved as a starting point. What is the case over-all length of this cartridge when loaded with the Sierra (.223) 80 grain MatchKing HPBT?
3. When looking at the .22-6mm Ackley Improved what is the velocity range of this round?
4. Does anyone have any first-hand experience with the .22-6mm Ackly Improved cartridge?
5. The same basic question as numbers 2 and 3 except using the Hornady 80 grain HPBT.
6. The same question as number 5, except using the heavier .22 caliber Berger bullets.
Thank you.

1. Where can I find reliable published data for wildcat cartridges?
Unfortunatly there is not much out there on the 22-6mm AI. Though it is close to the 224 TTH (Texas Trophy Hunter) cartridge. There may be some reloading info floating around on http://www.6mmbr.com
2. I think I have selected the .22-6mm Ackley Improved as a starting point. What is the case over-all length of this cartridge when loaded with the Sierra (.223) 80 grain MatchKing HPBT?
I am not sure of the exact length but you are going to need a long action if you want a repeater. If you are looking for a solid bottom single shot (XP-100 action) then you can use a short action.
3. When looking at the .22-6mm Ackley Improved what is the velocity range of this round?
Again this is a big unknown it ia blazing fast because you are burning a lot of powder behind a little bullet. Your problem is your barrel life everyone I have talked to say your barrel life is at a max of 800 rounds. That would require replacing the barrel after every match in the bench rest world. That is nuts in anyones book.
4. Does anyone have any first-hand experience with the .22-6mm Ackly Improved cartridge?
I have none other than researching it over the net.
5. The same basic question as numbers 2 and 3 except using the Hornady 80 grain HPBT.
Same answer as 2 and 3.
6. The same question as number 5, except using the heavier .22 caliber Berger bullets.
Same answer as 2 and 3.
You are going to need no more than a 7 twist barrel on this even a 6.5 twist this is getting to the point of high velocity and super fast twist your throat is going to go smooth in a matter of no time. Plus these are very expensive barrels to by replacing like trees in a fire.
For DOC this cartridge is based on the 6mm AI. It is not a true ackley cartridge.
After thinking about it I think you would be better off with a 22ppc or 22BR I know of guys shooting the 223 in 1000 yard matches. The 22ppc and br are not as fast but they are extreamly accurate.
If you don’t maintain the weapon appropriately then obviously this may actually affect exactly how precise your shots will be when competing. Before you even embark on cleaning your weapon the first thing you must do from a safety standpoint is make sure that there is no shells in it. Only when you've completed this can you commence the task of dismantling and cleaning the weapon. You should read through the manual included with your weapon as this will spell out fully how to strip down the weapon properly. On the subject of cleaning paraphernalia for the shotgun a honest dealer of skeet and trap shooting supplies can offer what you need. Besides looking for these things in the area we will find you what you are seeking online.

I’m Giving Up On This One..,
I’m a big fan of RCBS and have been handloading for more years than I care to admit.
For years I used the RCBS press mounted tube feeder that came with my Rock Chucker press. It worked, but the problems were 1)loading primers in the tubes was a bit tedious, 2)the last 1-3 primers in the tube did not feed right as there was no weight on top of them, and 3)it took more force than one would think on the up stroke of the press to seat a primer.
A number of years ago I graduated to a hand held Lee Auto Prime. This is the old one with the round tray. It worked very well. Nice feel, primers seat easily, and I can watch TV while I prime a bucket of cases. Problems started when I began shooting IDPA and buying once fired brass. The slightest burr on the head of the case will prevent the head from sliding into the tight Lee shell holder. The same case will slide easily into the RCBS shell holder and will chamber and fire no problem. And as I struggle to mount cases in the Lee I am spilling primers, flipping primers, etc. Need something better.
That’s what lead me to the RCBS APS Press Mounted Primer. I also bought the APS strip loading tool at the same time. Strip loader takes some getting used to as some finesse is required to shake the primers in place. After a couple strips though it goes pretty well.
Cannot say the same about the APS seating tool. My first session with it all I managed to do is jam the assembly about a dozen times (requiring a full dis-assembly to clear)and prime exactly zero cases. I called RCBS customer support and they send me out replacement guts for the unit and new strips. After rebuilding and very carefully readjusting, my results are better but not good. Problems are:
* Seating ram will frequently jam in the plastic strip requiring one to remove 4 screws on top to clear
* Height adjustment is very sensitive; fine line between correctly seated and deforming primer. Almost impossible to achieve with mixed, once fired brass.
* No feel to the seating operation as there is with the Lee hand tool, or even RCBS press mounted tube system.
Mind you, I am pretty mechanically inclined and spent quite a bit of time adjusting and tweaking but I succeeded in minimizing the jam and seating problems, never eliminated them. At least every other strip had me disassembling the tool or depriming a case with a live primer. Not good.
So, I am giving up on this unit as I cannot afford be mangling primers for loads I shoot in competition. Or that I pay good money for.
Instead I am going to try the RCBS APS Hand Priming Tool. I am hoping the strips will prevent the primer spills, the universal shell holder will not care about burrs on the case head, and the hand tool will give good feedback on the seating depth.
Probably a lot to expect….
