rcbs question by rfd: Problems with my 270 Winchester RCBS dies?
On bullet seating I am getting a ring around each projectile approx. .5 in down the projectile. I’m using a Sierra 130 SPBT Match King. I have never had this type problem before, but these are new dies and a new cal. Any ideas would be helpful, oe a help line at RCBS.

Answer by janitor bob
This happens with my RCBS bullet seats sometimes, as well. Here’s the number for RCBS customer service –1-800-533-5000– This problem is also covered in the FAQ section of their website….
Q. When I seat the bullet, the seater plug cuts a ring around the bullet just below the nose. What causes this?

A. In short, the seater plug does not fit the bullet you are using. The seater plug furnished with the Seater Die normally will fit the great majority of the bullets for that particular caliber. However, we cannot make one seater plug fit all bullets currently available. If you experience this problem or any similar problem where the seater plug doesn’t match the bullet and you wish to have a special seater plug made, we can supply one from the Special Order Department at minimum cost. See our Special Order Catalog for current pricing.

amazing what a trip to their website will do…..

Nice Electronic Scale and Dispenser, May 29, 2008

For many years I have been using a volumetric style of powder dispenser for all of my reloading. The old routine was to first fiddle around with the volume dispenser’s settings in order to get the correct weight of powder. Then throw nine charges straight into the prepared cases. The tenth charge would be weighed and any necessary adjustments would be made to the volumetric dispenser. If the volumetric dispenser was in a happy mood and liked the powder being used that day I might only weigh every 20th charge. If the dispenser was in a bad mood or didn’t care for the powder I might weigh every 5th round just to ensure consistency.

Depending upon the type and weight of powder my old volumetric dispenser would throw charges within +/- 0.2 grains of the desired amount. It liked some powders but others would cause binding in the mechanism and make the task of reloading a pain-in-the-posterior.

The RCBS dispenser works equally well with all types of smokeless powders. I use about six different powders depending upon the cartridge being loaded and none of the powders caused any problems for the dispenser. Be aware that RCBS prohibits using black powder in this dispenser!

The scale is accurate but there are a couple of operational parameters to be aware of. First, the scale needs to be acclimated to the room’s temperature for about 30 minutes before you begin using it. In other words, you don’t want to store this thing in your cool basement then haul it into your warmer work area and start loading right away. If, however, the unit is stored in the same room where you reload then there’s no need to wait for 30 minutes.

The second operational parameter regarding the scale is that vibrations will interfere with accurate weighing. Don’t put the scale on the same workbench as your reloading press. I’ve got a smaller table next to my bench that I use to set the scale on.

The nice thing about the scale is that it’s accurate. There is a short calibration ritual to be performed before every use, but that process is quick and easy to perform with the included check weights.

I used my beam-balance to verify the accuracy of the RCBS electronic scale. The RCBS always reads exactly 0.1 grains less than my beam-balance. I don’t really know which one is “right” but the difference between the two scales is always 0.1 grains so my existing cookbook of loads can be easily adjusted depending upon which scale I’m using.

The dispenser has the ability to store, in memory, several of your favorite loads. I find this feature to be more trouble than its worth. The entry method involves a rather cumbersome and lengthy key-stroke process and the amount of descriptive text that you can enter for each stored load is very limited (about 8 character for the cartridge, another 8 for the powder type). Its far easier to just punch in the desired charge weight at the start of your reloading session. Calling up a stored load takes more key strokes than simply entering the desired weight and hitting the dispense button.

Speaking of the dispense button, you don’t even need to hit that when you want powder. The ChargeMaster has a handy feature that automatically dispenses the powder charge when the scale detects that an empty pan has been set down.

The dispenser / scale combination seem to “learn” the most efficient speed to run at while dispensing the powder. The first few times that you dispense a charge the dispensing motor will run at moderate to low speed. It might even overshoot the desired weight by a 1/10 of a grain the first one or two dispensings. For subsequent dispensing cycles the motor will run at high speed until it gets close to the desired charge weight at which time is will go into low speed for the last tenth-or-two of weight and will consistently hit the desired weight every time. Pretty darn efficient system!

With an electronic dispenser / scale combination I’ve had to adjust my reloading ritual a bit. With the old volumetric dispenser I would throw a hundred charges or so then take all of the filled cases over to the press and begin seating bullets. With the electronic dispenser I find it more time efficient to be seating a bullet while the dispenser is measuring the next charge. Overall I’m still loading about the same number of rounds per hour but now I’m actually weighing 100% of the powder charges instead of every 10th.

I’m very happy with this dispenser / scale combination. The old volumetric dispenser has been relegated to a cardboard box… somewhere in the basement.

This review is from: RCBS Powder Measure Combo Md: 98923 . (Misc.)

I have been reloading many years and the biggest pain in my side is meticulously weighing each powder charge down to the tenth of a grain. My obsessive side shows and I use a lab scale to get every charge exactly correct. I decided to give the RCBS Chargemaster Combo a try. I am extremely pleased at how quickly and how accurately it dispenses powder. I did multiple tests between the RCBS and my lab scale. I found the RCBS to be +/- .02 gn per load. This variation could very well be air currents in the room.

My only complaint is that I can’t take this thing to the range without having to bring an inverter and car battery. But, when I reload a lot of rounds, the RCBS is my new friend, it will save me a huge amount of reloading time and is accurate enough for the most “retentive” reloader.

I was getting tired of the persnickety nature of the old volumetric dispenser so I finally took the plunge and purchased the RCBS 1500 Chargemaster dispenser with the integrated electronic scale. Here are my observations on this little gem.

First, the dispenser works equally well with all types of smokeless powders. I use about six different powders depending upon the cartridge being loaded and none of the powders caused any problems for the dispenser. Be aware that RCBS prohibits using black powder in this dispenser!
